I just watched Moana today. And wow. I was crying even before it started. Hahahaha because of the trailers for Sunday Beauty Queens and Power Rangers. I just felt so much empathy for the characters. Huhu! So excited for this year’s Manila Film Festival lineup! Wait, back to Moana… It was so beautiful!!!! The storyline, the animation, the character design. I loved it so much I think I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
One line that struck me throughout the movie…
And when Moana thought to herself while looking at the vast expanse of the ocean, “There’s more beyond the reef.”
I felt something tugged at my heart. Something within me is being pulled or being pushed. To go. To go beyond what I see. To go beyond what I’m used to. To go beyond my comfort zone. Just like Moana, we have to make that choice—to follow that inner voice and sail an ocean of uncertainty or to stay at the shores, never knowing how far we can go.
Her story also reminded me of another story from the Bible.
When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.
(Mark 14:25-29, ESV)
Moana chose to sail the uncertain sea because of that inner voice that kept telling her to go. And when she did… She discovered that there is, truly, more beyond the reef.
As for us, we are also called to go. And we can have the courage to go beyond when we know One who’s calling us. The harsh winds and rough waves can and will go against us, but there is peace in knowing that One who called us is also the One who holds them together. So let’s go. Let’s go and find out how far we’ll go…with Him.
